Keloids

A keloid is an enlarged scar that is usually hard and projects above the skin surface. There is no known cause and will never become malignant.

Symptoms

Symptoms of keloids include:

Pink, red, or purple scar
Appear slowly

The scars may feel itchy or sore while growing, but symptoms stop when keloid stops developing.

Treatments

Keloids can occur in anyone, but dark-skinned individuals form keloids more easily than people who are fair-skinned. Keloids may develop on any part of the body; the most common areas are the upper trunk, around the shoulders, and upper arms.

Treatment options include:

Intralesional corticosteroids
Excision (surgical removal)
Silicone gel sheeting
Cryosurgery (combined with other modalities)
Laser
