Keratosis Pilaris

Keratosis pilaris (KP)is a very common benign skin condition appearing as small, red bumps on the upper arms, thighs, and/or buttocks. Lesions can be present throughout life but are usually most prominent during teenage years.

Symptoms

Symptoms of KP include the following:

  • Rough, dry, skin
  • Bumps that match skin tone
  • More noticeable during winter
keratosis pilaris on the back of arm.

Treatments

The tendency for KP is an inherited trait and therefore complete resolution is unlikely.

  • Minimizing picking/scratching at lesions will lessen the risk of bleeding and infection.
  • Keratolytic creams can help minimize the raised texture of KP.
  • Topical retinoid creams can help smooth texture.
  • Treatment of redness is often challenging.
