Scabies

Scabies is a highly contagious but curable, itchy rash that affects millions of people worldwide. It is caused by the infection of the skin by a tiny mite that favors body fold areas in the skin. 

Symptoms 

The rash caused by scabies is almost always characterized by worsening itching and the following symptoms:

  • Several, small, itchy red bumps clustered around body folds (webspaces on the hands and feet, underarms, groin etc.)
  • Several scabs are present due to scratching at lesions.
  • Areas involved often gradually increase as time goes by.
  • There is usually minimal improvement with basic anti-itch creams.

Treatments

Treatment of scabies usually involves:

  • Topical or Oral therapy targeting the mites
  • Washing all recently worn clothes, blankets, and sheets
  • Concurrent treatment of all close contacts
